Four Simple Truths

The Argument

An inclusive reading of sacred texts is based on four solid foundations, shared by contemporary theologians from the three monotheistic faiths.

God is universal love

The major monotheistic religions are founded on love, compassion, and justice. No explicit condemnation of homosexuality is made by Jesus, who advocates for the inclusion of the marginalized and for unconditional welcome.

02. The texts are contextualized

Passages used against LGBT people must be understood in their historical context: pagan rites, ancient social norms, tribal purity codes. Reading these texts out of context betrays their spiritual intention.

03. Interpretation is human

Religious interpretations have been influenced by cultural norms: patriarchy, heterocentrism, and power structures. Recognizing the human dimension of interpretation opens the way to rereadings that are faithful to the spirit of the texts.

04. Faith and diversity are compatible

Many inclusive religious communities exist all over the world: open parishes, Reformed synagogues, progressive mosques. Every day, theologians publish acclaimed inclusive interpretations.
